Mango Ginger - Mangai Inji



Mango ginger-a spice crop which has the flavour of Mango and ginger. Appears like ginger and taste of raw mango with a touch of ginger flavour. Botanically speaking this spice is called Curcuma amada (mango ginger) and this is neither related to mango nor ginger, but to turmeric family. The rhizome has excellent medicinal properties and finds extensive use in the indigenous system of medicine. It is a great appetizer, antipyretic and laxative. It is useful in flatulence ,biliousness, itching, skin diseases, bronchitis, asthma, cough and inflammation due to injuries.   1. Mango ginger - 3 or 4 rhizomes
  2. Fresh ginger - a small piece (optional)
  3. Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  4. Green chillies -1 or 2
  5. Lime - 1 or 2
  6. Oil - 1 teaspoon for seasoning
  7. Salt to taste 

  • Peel the mango ginger and slice them into thin slices. Put them in the salad bowl. Squeeze in to 2 limes. Add salt. Optionally you can peel and finely slice the regular ginger too and add here)
  • In a small kadai add one spoon of oil and add the mustard seeds. Once it splutters pour this over the mango ginger slices and mix well

  • Tastes good as a fresh salad or a side dish to curd rice. If stored in a fridge, this will keep for 3-4 days.
