Vengaya Thuvayal - Onion Chutney
சின்ன வெங்காய துவையல்
Ingredients:
- Small onions ( Shallots) - 2 cups ( peeled)
- Tomato - 4
- Red Chillies - 10
- Garlic - 1/2 clove ( optional)
- Tamarind - a pinch
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Salt to taste
Preparation:
- Grind the peeled raw small onions to a fine paste ( without using any water). Keep aside.
- Grind the red chilles, tomato, garlic ( optional), tamarind, salt together.
- In a kadai using one spoon of oil add the mustard seeds.
- After it splutters, pour in the onion paste.Let it cook in the oil for a few minutes.
- Then add tomato, chilli pulp. Stir well.
- Cook till the raw smell of onion goes.
This goes well with idlis, dosas and rotis.
Adding tomato is optional. This adds to color and a tangy taste. If you prefer the hot and pungent flavor of the onions do not add tomatoes.
