Rava Uppuma
ரவா உப்புமா
Ingredients:
- Sooji rava (pre-roasted*) 1 cup
- Onion large 1
- Green peas ( optional) 1/2 cup
- Urad dal 1 teaspoon
- Channa dal 1 teaspoon
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Green chillies 2-3
- Carrot 1 very small pieces (optional)
- Potato 1 - diced into very small pieces (optional)
- Tomato 1 - cut into small pieces (optional)
- Coriander leaves - a few
- Curry leaves- a few
- Oil - 2 to 3 teaspoons
- Salt to taste
* Rava available now a days are pre-roasted. If you are in doubt, in a dry tava, dry roast the rava till it just starts to turn to brown. Keep this aside.
Preparation:
- In a tava pour one teaspoon of oil and add the mustards. After it splutters add the channa dal and urad dal. add the finely cut onions and fry till golden brown.Add the green chillies.( if you have potato and carrot add those at this stage)
- Add two cups of water.Add salt
- After the water starts to boil, add the rava and keep turning. Add the curry leaves and the green peas.
- The rava will start absorbing the water and will start to thicken. Add two spoons of oil and keep turning. ( If you have tomato pieces add at this stage)The upma should be done in 10 minutes. Sample taste a spoon and make sure it does not stick in your tongue.
- Add coriander leaves and remove from heat and serve hot.
Rava Kichadi
Rava kichadi is very similar to the above process. It will necessarily have tomato pieces and green peas, potato and carrot optionally.
Add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder at stage 2 of above.
Fry a few pieces of cashew nuts in a spoon of ghee and add them before removing from heat.
